Informed Consent Form for Testosterone

I went to Planned Parenthood recently, and in order to start HRT through them you must sign and initial an informed consent form. It lists all the known effects and side effects that may occur while you take testosterone. I figured that some FTM/trans masculine people out there might find this useful, so here it is. I copied it exactly as it appears on the form. Anyway, this is what you should expect to see if you go to begin HRT, but your form might be slightly different. The information should be pretty much the same, though.

I’m just confused and kind of concerned about this letter. Basically in order to have a consultation regarding HRT with my primary care physician, they needed a letter detailing what was discussed in therapy, my history, current mental state, ETC.

And it says right here in the letter that my therapist would “support hormone treatment because of the relief I hope that would provide.”

Does this mean I have the go-ahead for HRT?

Does this mean my doctor can potentially prescribe testosterone?

Help I am confuse????

My dad tried to use this argument with me when I came out as transgender. It really bothers me because the people who tend to make the argument that “gender doesn’t matter!” are the types who have never once questioned their gender, never experimented with their gender presentation, or—perhaps most importantly—have never experienced gender dysphoria. They’re also the same types of people who get upset over someone misgendering them, yet INSIST on using the wrong pronouns/name for trans* people.
Gender is and can be an extremely important of a person’s identity. And not just trans* people—cis people can place a lot of value on their gender identity as well! Plus, in this world, gender can affect how much you’ll get paid, who wants to start a relationship/have sex with you, and how you’ll be treated in your career field, among other things. To act like it doesn’t matter at all is foolish.
Absolutely necessary disclaimer so people who are cis don’t shit their pants with rage: Cis ppl =/= cis people or cis allies. Cis ppl are the idiots who believe this argument, the idiots who believe trans* individuals are just confused, the idiots who believe that HRT or surgeries are “just cosmetic,” the idiots who believe in the “womyn born womyn” bullshit, the idiots who don’t respect a trans* person’s preferred pronouns, and so on.

Thoughts

I watched Small Town Security. They aired it again after a second airing of Breaking Bad, so I figured I’d take a look. It’s an “unscripted TV show,” which essentially translates to a reality TV show, so the characters are real people with real lives. I had my doubts, as the commercials kind of played it off to be a copy of Reno 911, but I ended up being wrong about my original assumption.

All in all, I’m pretty pleased with how they presented Dennis Croft’s character. He isn’t presented in an overwhelmingly positive light, but he isn’t presented in a negative light, either. He’s presented in a realistic light. He’s a lieutenant, he has a family that he’s (apparently) been separated from, he has a military background, he has high hopes for the security team, and he happens to be transgender. It was just one aspect of his life that happened to be a little out of the ordinary, and it wasn’t treated like a huge deal.

I’m also very pleased that they brought up the hardcore, fundie Christian response to transgender people: The idea that being trans* is an abomination, and that “you shouldn’t be something you’re not,” and all that usual BS. Dennis’ response completely shot down that idea. The show stressed that being trans* is NOT a choice by any means, and that day-to-day life is a struggle. Dennis didn’t say it outright, but it was heavily implied that transitioning is a necessity for many trans* people. This part was shown in a “five years ago” clip in another character’s TV show (kind of like a flashback, but not quite).

When the host of the TV show asked Dennis how he feels today, post-transition, he responded, “I feel free.” His transition was shown in a positive-for-him light on the TV show, and it was undoubtedly that way for him in real life.

But more importantly, I’m extremely happy that there’s more trans male representation in the media that isn’t negative OR incredibly positive, but realistic. Young trans boys can, if they watch Small Town Security, realize that their feelings are not only valid, but common. They have someone to relate to now, who isn’t some glamorous dancer who happens to be the son of a world-famous singer.

I’m extremely pleased that AMC is running this show, and I couldn’t be more supportive of it at this point. Of course, these are just my impressions from the first episode, and they are subject to change if the show suddenly focuses all their attention on Dennis. I doubt that that will happen, as all of the characters still haven’t been formally introduced, and my gut feeling tells me they won’t make a massive deal out of it.

I’m not sure if anyone who follows me has heard of Hahn-Bin, so I’m going to introduce you to them. I saw one of his concerts a couple years ago and it was incredible. I suppose you could compare them to Lady Gaga in terms of fashion, but it would likely be inaccurate to compare the two of them on other terms. Hahn-Bin has expressed that they don’t follow the gender binary, though I don’t know their preferred pronouns or whether or not they identify as queer.

It’s a shame that this video is in black and white, because their makeup and clothing was very bright and colorful, probably similar to this:

I’m really trying to be a positive role model for trans people and it upsets me that after I SPECIFICALLY asked the producers of “Cake Boss” NOT to disrespect me or trans people. Before I agreed to do this show, I was assured and then reassured that it wasn’t going to be like the JERRY SPRINGER show or MAURY. Let me make this clear. CALLING A TRANSGENDER WOMAN A MAN IS WRONG. Period. Its degrading, its rude, and its very hurtful. I may not have been born a woman, but im NOT a man. I told them I would mind if they said “born male” or “was a male”. After taking this journey its not fair at all to be lied to by the producers. PLEASE PASS THIS ALONG. EDUCATE AND PROMOTE EQUALITY AND RESPECT!!!!!!!

The fact that they STILL misgendered her after she SPECIFICALLY told them not to is absolutely despicable. I urge you to call them out on this on their Facebook page.

Duct Tape binder for all!

fuckyeahftms:

My duct tape binder!

It doesn’t work very well unless I wear an undershirt, and a loose top.

If you’re like me (dirt poor, can’t afford a binder, but live in a place full of duct tape and red necks) then this may be the temporary look for you!

All you need to do is…

1)Take a roll of your favorite duct tape

2) Rip off 2 small pieces and cover your nips!

3) (depending on how large your breasts are, this next step may take 5-10 long strips of duct tape per breast) Measure from the inner corner of the duct tape on your nips to about your mid back or scapula. That’s how long the next few pieces of tape need to be. Rip off 3 to start. One in the middle covering the nip tape, one on top, and one on bottom. Be sure that when you set the tape starting at the inner corner of the nip tape, you pull on the tape as your fastening it to your back. Keep doing this until you get the desired shape.

4) (optional) If your tape is starting to clump and wrinkle, you can put tape over it horizontally to even everything out. I normally only need to do this with the starting points at my mid chest.

5) Put on a tank and your manly shirt and go clubbing around with your new ghetto binder!

This may not work as well for the bigger breasts, but it works fine for A, B, and most C cups.

alright

I’m gonna get on my soapbox and say that using duct tape for binding is definitely an awful idea and frankly there are safer, equally-cheap options out there (such as the double-sports bra method—wear one regularly, the other backwards. You can use really cheap soft ones and it’ll work pretty well if you wear a loose shirt).

There are also some programs which provide gently used binders to people who need them. I’m also kind of surprised that fuckyeahftms posted this, because a lot of young trans guys use that blog as a resource, and might try this method and hurt themselves.

Even if you aren’t putting it around your entire torso (as you would with bandages, for instance), which would crush your rib cage and probably eventually break your sternum, you can still rip your skin off.

Which is extremely painful and can lead to some really nasty infections.

So to anyone who needs/wants to bind for any reason: Don’t use duct tape. It is NEVER a good idea for any reason.

I guess the only useful thing about dysphoria is that it inspired me to make comics again and actually put some amount of effort into it.
Here it is in my dA gallery, where it hasn’t been chopped up to look nice.

IMPORTANT PLEASE READ!!

edman93:

If studying-lgbtq-people inboxes you asking to take part in questions about LGBTQ people “to help her understand” DO NOT DO IT. It is Sophie M Herold, the girl from Germany who attacks LGBTQ people and outs them to others. She is transphobic, homophobic and one of the sickest people I know. And now she’s back with a cunning new plan to get you NAME, ADDRESS, BIRTH DATE, AND PHOTO.

This girl is dangerous, and for some reason is allowed to keep making new tumblr accounts. We’ve raised awareness before and it helped, so lets do it again before she puts another persons life in danger. She collects your information and gives it out to others, she has sent letters to peoples parents outing them, other people have gotten hurt because of her. Yes, hurt.

Even if we can’t stop her again, get this message out and stop others giving her information etc.

And Sophie, you should know by now not to fuck with me again, wrong move, buddy.

Seriously don’t answer anything that she asks.

This is a person who genuinely wants to hurt LGBTQ people. She is outing us and giving our names to hate groups. She is fucked up, she is sick, she is twisted. Do NOT attempt to contact her for ANY reason—it could be dangerous.

It’s worth mentioning that she specifically targeted lesbians and trans men in the past. But even if you don’t identify as either of those, it’s still best to avoid her at all costs.

My parents and I came up with this because they still mess up my pronouns/name a lot. Every time they mess it up, I charge them some amount of cents based on how “offensive” it was (for instance, just slipping up with no correction unless I prompt it is 10 cents; making fun of me or using the wrong name/pronoun on purpose is 25 cents, and so on. Saying “it” in any given context is always $10 - $20, depending on the specific situation).
All the money will go towards top surgery or HRT, but most likely top surgery.
I dunno, I think it’s a pretty good idea for trans* people who still live with their parents (or other people), who want to be supportive and who want to get used to using the correct name and pronouns.

Custom, inexpensive binders

sickbleats:

I know some people were interested in that hypothetical “colorful binders” post going around, and I also know that price is a concern when it comes to chest binding and stuff!! These are strapless velcro binders made to fit your measurements, and you can ask for it to be made in patterned or colorful cloth. Pretty legit!
